The entertaining and intelligent way to challenge your baseball knowledge... Play by yourself or against friends!
Baseball trivia can be boring... at least in the dry, uninspiring way it's presented in most baseball trivia quiz books. "Who led the American League in doubles in 1962?" Unless you're Floyd Robinson's mother, who cares? You either know the answer or you don't... there's no thinking involved.
Baseball trivia can be thought-provoking and entertaining... if it's presented in the right way. And I prefer trivia questions that make me think:
- "Eight New York Yankees have won the American League batting title. Name them."
- "Since Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series, 11 pitchers have thrown perfectos in the major leagues. Who are they?"
- "Who are the top 10 active players in career batting average (minimum 3,000 PA)?"
By putting some thought into these kinds of questions, you can come up with many, if not all, of the answers.
"Gimme a hint."
There's another unique element here. Good trivia, like a good detective novel, provides clues along the way. When a friend asks you a question to which you don't know the answer, you might say, "Can you give me a hint?" Rich Burk's Baseball Trivia Game Book accommodates this request.
Suppose, after you had a chance to think about and answer the questions above, I provided you with these clues to help you with the parts you're unsure of:
- "Here are the years a Yankee has won the American League batting title: 1924, '34, '39, '40, '45, '56, '84, '94 and '98."
- "Here are the teams for which each pitcher tossed his perfect game since 1957: 1964 Phillies, 1965 Dodgers, 1968 A's, 1981 Indians, 1984 Angels, 1988 Reds, 1991 Expos, 1994 Rangers, 1998 Yankees, 1999 Yankees, 2004 Diamondbacks."
- "Here, in no particular order, is a 2005 teammate for each of the top 10 active hitters in career batting average: Edgar Renteria, Carlos Beltran, Mark Buehrle, Clint Barmes, Aaron Small, Jim Edmonds, Richie Sexson, Bengie Molina, Kerry Wood and Ruben Sierra."
See how it works? The hints will jog your memory and help you along the way.
There are 15 nine-inning games
Each chapter is actually a nine-inning contest based loosely on a particular topic. You'll score runs by answering questions correctly, and the fewer hints you use, the better you'll score. You can play by yourself against a fictitious opponent, or you can play against one or more friends. If you're tied after nine innings, there are extra innings at the end of the book to break the deadlock. There are even two levels of scoring: "Standard" and "Ultra-Fan," to keep the games competitive for fans of different skill levels.
