About Rich Burk

This is the part of the website where I talk about me, although I'm always at a loss as to what to say about myself. I've never heard Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell or Jack Buck say, "I'm great because..."

So, for better or worse, judge for yourself:

Television Demo: Opening Segment, July 21, 2007

• QuickTime file

Television Demo: Top of 1st Inning, July 21, 2007

• QuickTime file

Radio Demo: Bottom of 1st Inning, July 4, 2007

• MP3 file

Of course, there are other places on this site where you can hear more of my radio play-by-play, and dozens of interviews are available too.

As it indicates at the top of every page, I've been the voice of Portland's baseball teams since 1995 -- that is, from 1995-2000, the Class A Portland Rockies, and since 2001, the Triple-A Portland Beavers. And over the past few years I've been fortunate enough to get the opportunity to fill in for the San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays.

If you'd like to read more about me, I had the honor of being one of the broadcasters featured at www.thesoundofbaseball.com. (If my interview is no longer at the top of the page, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Q&A Archives.") Mario Impemba, the television voice of the Detroit Tigers, runs that outstanding website.

For what it's worth, I love to tell stories. That, after all, is what makes baseball so much fun, isn't it? The pace of the game allows for storytelling -- whether those stories are about my center fielder, or Casey Stengel's center fielder. Those are the details, properly woven into the play-by-play, that bring the game to life.

One more thing. I've been blessed enough to have some other people say a few nice things about me, so I'll pass some of those along:

"I’m amazed at the details he digs up and saves for exactly the right moment, and at his encyclopedic storehouse of interesting stories about both the players in today’s game and the whole of baseball history." -- Rob Neyer, ESPN.com

"He has the capacity to make the game come alive." -- Curt Smith, the author of the book Voices of the Game, which The Sporting News called "the definitive history of baseball broadcasting"

"He has worked diligently to refine his craft as a baseball play-by-play man. His knowledge and love of the game, and dedication to his profession, are impressive." -- Bob Costas, NBC Sports

“Rich is an excellent interviewer. He’s well-prepared and asks knowledgeable questions. I’ll take any time out of my day to go on the air with him.” -- Xavier Nady, outfielder, Pittsburgh Pirates

"I’m always amazed at his knowledge and passion for the game. And he definitely has the voice that will capture the interest of any baseball fan." -- Kevin Towers, general manager, San Diego Padres

"His descriptions are colorful and accurate." -- Ernie Harwell, Hall-of-Fame Broadcaster
